General Musician Information and Rehearsal Schedule

This page is for the benefit of the musicians in the orchestra ONLY.

GENERAL MUSICIAN INFORMATION

WHERE? WHEN? The date, time, and location of every rehearsal and concert is noted below.

HOW DO I GET THERE? (a) St. John’s Lutheran Church, 81 Christopher Street, Manhattan, in the West Village just west of 7th Avenue (it’s technically 7th Avenue South, but nobody calls it that), is within a stone’s throw of the Christopher Street #1 train station. (Please note that the #2 and #3 express trains do NOT stop at this station; change to the #1 train at 14th Street if you’re coming on the 2 or 3 from the north, or at Chambers if you’re coming from the south.) St. John’s is also very close (essentially one crosstown block) to the West 4th Street station serving the A,B,C,D,E,F,V trains; just walk along West 4th Street from 6th Avenue to 7th Avenue. Click here for a Mapquest map, and here for the MTA subway map.
      (b) St. Thomas Aquinas, 4th Avenue and 9th Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn, is right across the street from the 4th Avenue station on the F train. On the lower level (below street level) in that same subway station are the M and R trains, which you can catch at the Atlantic Avenue/Pacific Street station, a major transfer point in Brooklyn also serving the N,Q,W,2,3,4, and 5 trains. (This 4th Avenue station is called “9th Street” when you’re on the M and R trains.) Click here for a Mapquest map, and here for the MTA subway map.
      (c) Orchestra members, we have e-mailed you written directions for getting to the Clay Tennis Courts in Riverside Park. Click here to download a map. The concert site is just north of the tennis courts themselves, which are clearly indicated on the map. PLEASE allow yourself PLENTY of time to get there, especially if you’ve never been there before. It takes longer than you think!

BRING A MUSIC STAND? You usually don’t need to. We’ll explicitly let you know if you do need to bring a stand. Remember, however, in case you’re not sure, that it’s always safer to bring one unless you’re totally positive you don’t need to.

BRING ANYTHING ELSE? All string players, you need a mute. ALWAYS have a mute with you. It’s part of the equipment that goes with your instrument, like your bow and your rosin.
CelloBasses, bring a Rockstop or “strap” or whatever kind of endpin rest you use.

WHAT DO I WEAR? Normal (indoors) concert dress is tuxedo (or dark suit with black bow tie) for the men, and all-black for the ladies. Park concert dress is business casual (please, not beach-bum casual).

PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF THE CHURCHES that we rehearse and play in. We are their guests. Clean up after yourself, don’t make a mess in the first place, etc. Commonsense stuff.
