Biography of Musica Bella Orchestra member Stephen Cha

Stephen Cha, violoncello, has been performing as a soloist and chamber musician since the age of eight. He studied under Nell Novak at the Music Center of the North Shore until entering Brown University.
There, he served as principal cellist in the orchestra, and won the Brown University Concerto Competition in 1994, performing with the orchestra that year. The Providence Journal called him an “impressive young cellist” who “not only plays with a lot of daring, but knows how to coax a gossamer line.” On graduation, he was awarded the Rostropovich Award in recognition of his contributions to music at Brown.
He has also performed with multiple chamber ensembles throughout his career — at Brown, he helped form a 24-member cello choir and served as its musical director. Currently, he serves as chief resident in the Department of Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center and continues to play and perform whenever possible.
